Bill is both a lawyer and an artist, who is experiencing growing success on the local art scene with his abstract and figurative works in oil. His success is made more interesting given that he only seriously took up a paint brush five years ago. “For a long while I’ve really liked art, but I never thought to give it a whirl until relatively later in my life,” Bill says. “It’s something I first took up with my youngest daughter – but she got bored with it and I went on. I used to have classes on Friday afternoons – a good alternative to the pub.” But the hobby became more serious when a friend with art gallery contacts saw his work and encouraged him to take it further. Bill says he has any number of paintings in progress at one time and works in a fairly haphazard way. Stacked canvases in various states of progress and in a range of shapes and sizes line the walls of his home. One constant is the use of subdued colour, creating a reflective mood. “I don’t know what inspires me really,” he says. “I might start out with an idea but by the end it’s developed into something completely different to what I’d first thought.” Despite his success, Bill expects that art will always play second fiddle to the law. “I don’t think I could do it full time, I’d miss having social interaction too much.” Bill’s second exhibition, recently held at The Citadel in Adelaide, sold out. - Catherine Bauer Comment and enquiries for Bill’s work are welcomed at wgb@wgb.com.au.
